Stone Tools

Early humans made tools from stone. They would smash large pieces of rock and use the sharp pieces for tools. In time they learned how to break a rock just the right way to make different shapes for different kinds of tools. A rough chopping tool made from a fist-sized piece of rock would have been used for hacking wood or as a weapon in a fight. A hand-axe would have been used to skin and cut up game and it had sharp edges towards the point. A spearhead had a sharp point and edges. It was attached to a long stick, and probably used for thrusting and jabbing rather than for throwing. A notched piece was used to shape wood by scraping it, for example to fashion smooth, round shafts for arrows. A borer with a long, thin, sharp point could punch neat holes in animal skins, for example to take the leather thongs that laced the edges of a garment together. A backed flake was a long tool like the blade of a pocket-knife, with one sharp edge and a dull, flat back edge that the finger could press on for cutting meat or skins or even wood.
