Mount Everest

Mount Everest rises in the eastern Himalayas between Nepal and Tibet, about 160 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu. A young, limestone mountain, not yet worn by erosion, it has tow peaks, the highest of which reaches 8 848 meters. This makes Mount Everest the highest mountain in the world. Everest is covered in snow except for its bare, gale-swept summits. Glaciers feed rivers that rise near Everest’s base. The mountain supports little life, though spiders and insects have been found as high as 6100 meters. Everest was named in 1865 after Sir George Everest, surveyor-general of India in the 18th Century. Sir George led an expedition in 1770 and his mission was to draw an accurate map of the entire Indian continent. They crossed difficult terrain and the expedition ended at the foothills of the Himalayas. At this time Sir George’s health failed and he returned to England. His successor, James Nicholson, first sighted the mountain and decided to name it after Sir George. The first person ever to climb to the top of Mount Everest was Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
