Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is the term used all over the world for carnivals and festivals that involve highly decorated masks, costumes, dancing in the streets, non-stop music, lavishly decorated floats and general festivity that can last for days. Mardi Gras is a French phrase, literally meaning, “Fat Tuesday”. It is the last day before the fasting season for the Roman Catholic people. It was the last opportunity being merry and to indulge in food and drink before the fasting began. In the cities of some Roman Catholic countries the custom of holding carnivals for Mardi Gras has continued since the Middle Ages. The carnival with their spectacular parades, masked balls, mock ceremonials and street dancing usually last for a week or more before Mardi Gras itself. Most of the celebrations are held in New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro, Nice and Cologne. It has, however, become quite common to refer to any prolonged festivity involving the public at large, held in a public place, as a Mardi Gras. Johannesburg recently had a Mardi Gras when they had a Freedom Day celebration where Mr. Nelson Mandela was the quest speaker. |
