Beading Tools: Pliers
Pliers are used to open and close findings and to shape wire. They are among the essential tools used to make jewelry. Here's a look at some of the most common types of pliers. For most jewelry making and beading applications, these tools will be small rather than the standard size found in a handyman's toolbox. Needle Nose Pliers Needle nosed pliers have ends that taper toward their point to make small half-moons at the tip. This type of pliers is used for grasping wire or needles or for knotting bead work. The type with flat, smooth inner jaws are used for more for jewelry making because they will not mar or bend wire. Flat Nose Pliers Flat nose pliers are any pliers without ridges on their jaws. The type that do not taper to fine points are good for bending wire at right angles and for gripping findings and wire. Round Nose Pliers Each jaw on a pair of round nose pliers is round. These pliers taper to fine ends. They are used for shaping wire into circles and smooth curves. Crimping Pliers Crimping pliers are a type of specialty plier, found in jewelry and craft stores rather than hardware stores. They are used exclusively for smashing crimp beads or metal coils to secure cord or wire. Many jewelry makers get along just fine without crimping pliers, but if you do a lot of crimping, you may appreciate the consistent secure results you can get using these pliers. |
