Amphibians

Frogs, newts and blindworms are amphibians. They are animals that start their lives in the water and as they grow up they change and they are able to live on land as well. All amphibians are vertebrates and most of them have moist, soft skins. There are 3500 different kinds of frogs and toads. Amphibians were the first vertebrates to live on land. Most amphibians are small animals and to protect themselves from predators they hide during the day and are more active during the night. They have very small lungs and they breath partly through their skins. Skins can only breath when it is kept damp so they tend to live near water. Amphibians are cold-blooded animals. This means that their body temperature and their activity depends on the temperature of the air and water around them. When the weather is warm they are very active but when the weather is cold they tend to become less active. In cooler parts of the world, such as the northern Europe countries, amphibians hibernate during the winter months. Most adult amphibians lay large number of eggs in ponds and streams.
