Algae
Algae are plants without leaves, roots, stems or flowers. They are mostly found in wet places everywhere, from rivers to oceans and even on trees. Algae uses sunlight to make food. Many algae are microscopic but when millions of them grow together they look like green slime. Small algae are found in rivers, dams, and lakes and most importantly in the ocean. Most of the plant life in the ocean is tiny single celled algae known as plankton. This name is given to the millions of tiny, floating organisms that live near the surface of the ocean. They form the basic food for most of the animals that live in the ocean. One of the larger species of algae found in the ocean is the diatoms. They do not look like land plants but have a type of a shell that covers the living plant inside. They cannot swim but they have strange sharp spiky shapes that prevent them from sinking. When algae grow in large numbers they are called algal blooms and they cause great harm to the sea life because they are usually poisonous to animals. |
