Acne
Acne vulgaris commonly known as acne is a skin disease primarily caused by: 1. Family/genetic history. 2. Hormonal activity like puberty or menstrual cycle. 3. Stress 4. Accumulation of dead skin cells 5. Bacteria in skin pores 6. Hyperactive sebaceous glands 7. Irritation or scratching of the skin causing inflammation 8. Exposure to certain chemicals like dioxins 9. Anabolic steroids Acne can be treated using the following: 1. Topical bactericidal such as benzoyl peroxide 2. Topical antibiotics such as erythromycin, clindamycin or tetracycline 3. Oral antibiotics such as doxycycline, minocycline or lymecycline 4. Hormonal treatments (in females) like oestrogen/progestogen methods 5. Biological treatments 6. Oral retinoid like the oral intake of vitamin A 7. Phototherapy. Studies have shown that intense violet light, LED’s or lasers have improved acne.
